Taco Station Riverside – Revved Up on Taste

Taco Station, Riverside

Riverside’s hidden treasure The Taco Station was referred to us recently by one of our twitter followers.   I was intrigued when the message mentioned the the small Mexican Restaurant in Riverside with a garage motif.   But when I read about a secret menu with some bomb food, it was on my list of places to check out- ASAP.

The Taco Station is located on the corner of Mission Avenue and Brockton.  You can’t miss it with the large outdoor patio, and retro design.  You enter through the patio with several large tables accented by old fashioned gas pumps with the Taco Station logo. When you walk inside, you are hit with a such delicious aroma of homemade mexican specialties that you just want to stand and absorb. When your aromatic senses come creeping back, you’ll find the unique “garage decor” as well as the fast paced kitchen is a delight for the eyes, and you immediately feel comfortable in your surroundings.  The day I went, the kitchen was cooking up huge amounts of asada and crafting fresh dough for the sopas.

The menu is extensive with items for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The breakfast menu offers everything from chilaquiles and eggs, to breakfast sopes, and chorizo con papas and cheese.  This place is definitely a lot more than your basic breakfast burrito; and the menu is quite extensive.

Lunches and dinners have a large variety of ala carte items as well as combo plates.  Sauces and salsas are made fresh, and the place seems to pride itself on the freshest ingredients available.   So I mentioned the secret menu.  I first ordered “Ziggy’s Wet Taco” also referred to as Ziggy Mojado.  This creation, pictured left is a fresh tortilla with a delicately fried and battered piece of fish placed drenched in their secret red sauce and then topped with a cream sauce.  Oh my Gosh, this was good!  If you can’t handle spicy food, just skip this dish.  Their secret red sauce was very flavorful, but very hot.  The cream was an excellent accompaniment as it worked to cool the heat and it allowed the fish flavor to come through.  One of the best fish tacos I have eaten… but spicy.

My second selection was Ziggy’s Burrito de Enchilada.  Now why has has no one offered this before?  This is a creation of three homemade cheese enchiladas wrapped in a fresh flour tortilla, and then grilled.  The dish was oozing with creamy cheese and the combination of flavors of the slight taco stationcrispness of the grilled tortilla, the delicious enchilada sauce and the creamy goodness of the cheeses was amazing.  Now these items are not on the regular menu, so you will have to ask for them specifically.

If you’re really hungry (a competitive eater)- or if you’d like to share something (this monster should actually feed about 6 people) give the Axle burrito a try.  A 5 lb. creation  stuffed with meat, beans, rice, monterey cheese, lettuce, cilantro and guacamole.

Although the interior is small, the space is maximized and it was absolutely spotless.  The patio is large and is a great space for their open mic nights or to just unwind with friends and a couple of cervezas.  They offer a large selection of beers, and they have TV’s so you can hang out and watch the big games.

There’s plenty of parking, the service is friendly, the food really is the bomb, and prices are very reasonable so The Taco Station is definitely worth the trip.
