German Food in Calimesa

georges in CalimesaAuthentic German food in Calimesa?  Who knew!  There’s a quaint little European type of building reminiscent of a ski chalet on the North side of Calimesa Blvd filled with all sorts of authentic German and European foods and beers.  The name of this little German gem is George’s Market.

The deli is full of all sorts of cold cuts, wursts and sausages not found in most delis (herbed bologna, landjaeger sausage, smoked pork chops, and frankfurters). Of course, it would not be a true German deli without German potato salad (balanced sweet and tart, vinegar based dressing over sliced, cooked potatoes, specks of bacon, onion, parsley and other seasonings). My favorite deli item is the California made dried Hungarian Gyulai- slow cooked and smoked sausage made of pork, szalonna (Hungarian bacon fat), garlic, pepper, caraway, and Hungarian paprika (hot or mild) is available by the piece of package and is absolutely delicious.

If you’re just stopping in for a quick bite, they offer made to order sandwiches like Reubens, black forest ham, smoked bratwurst, hot pastrami (served on fresh made bread including an outstanding Pumpernickel) and plates for lunch and dinner.  There’s a small area inside where you can eat or you dine on the patio or Beer Garten where you can also enjoy a variety of German beers on tap.

Bakery items include fresh breads, pastries, strudels, and pretzels all made in the old World tradition.  A where else (especially in Calimesa) can you get fresh spaetzele?georges2

In addition to the deli and beers on tap, there is also a small grocery store where you can stock up on traditional German and European foods and staples.

A great place to visit when you’re craving something different or if you’re driving down the 10 freeway and need a food fix.  Prices are reasonable and quality is excellent.
