Magical Meatballs Make up the Perfect Grinder

Antone's meatball grinderEveryone has had a meatball sandwich at some point in time (unless of course, you are a vegetarian), and they are usually quite similar.  Meatballs or half meatballs smothered in red sauce, cheese, on a roll.  However, if you go to Antone’s in Riverside, you leave with a whole new definition and benchmark for the carnivore’s delight.

Antone’s is an old house converted into a restaurant.  Longevity is the first clue the place is going to be special; and they have been dishing out food for over 50 years at the Brockton Street location.  The inside is quaint and homey with old tables and chairs set up to each side of the counter.  In the kitchen the red sauce is stirred from old family recipes, and the bread is made fresh every day.  Yep… the bread for the sandwiches and garlic bread is made fresh every single day.

I ordered the meatball grinder, and at the recommendation of a friend ordered it on the garlic bread.   Warm meatballs are fork smashed to a extra chunky  consistency and mixed with the delicious red sauce.  Two slices of semi-crusty garlic bread are laid down and the meat is layered on one the bread pieces, and more red sauce ladled onto both halves.  Finally, a couple of slices of provolone cheese are placed over the meat, the sandwich assembled and heated before serving the customer.Antone's Riverside

The final result is an amazing combination of flavors and textures.  The bread is crusty on the outside and garlicky on the inside.  The chunky meat mixture is perfect with the gooey cheese, and there is just the right amount of the old world sauce to bring everything together.

As good as the meatball grinder was, it apparently isn’t even the most popular sandwich.  That title belongs to the “Mafia” a ham and salami cold cut grinder served on their fresh homemade bread.  Although Antone’s offers a variety of them, the menu is by no means restricted to sandwiches.  They also serve up a hand tossed pizzas, salads, spaghetti, and ravioli.  The hours are limited- 10:00-4:00 Monday through Saturday so you’ll have to get your fix during the day.  Try to go at a time other than lunch rush to avoid the lines, but you can always call in your order too.
